Presenting Metal Sculptor Tom Torrens’ Designer Collection
Tom
Torrens Globe Stands
The Contemporary Side of Classic
Contemporary
and casual, traditional and elegant, Tom Torrens’ creations
meld art and function. This world-reknowned metal sculptor
invites interaction with his work. His birdbaths, bells, fountains,
feeders, and furniture all adhere to this philosophy: they
transcend the static nature of traditional sculpture by changing
with the wind or the flow of the water.
Replogle
Globes, the world’s leading globe manufacturer, recently commissioned
Torrens to sculpt this line of globe stands.
There
are twelve styles available exclusively through Replogle ---
for desks or credenzas, office lobbies or living rooms. Some
are available in two sizes. "I
want my sculpture to address as many of the viewer’s senses
and emotions as possible," the artist says. "I call
these contemporary, functional designs." Now his kinetic
artwork moves into the home or office with a new spin on a
traditional accessory: the globe. "I’ve always liked
globes. They draw viewers into visual and physical relationships,"
Torrens says. "It’s difficult to walk past a globe without
touching and looking at it."
Once
the decorative centerpiece of traditional private studies
or executive offices, globes are appropriate accents anywhere
in homes and offices. And Torrens’ unique classic-contemporary
designs fit many interior styles. Torrens’ creations are reminiscent
of many proven design themes. "I find inspiration in
the ancient forms of Asian art, the style of Frank Lloyd Wright’s
work and the sculpture of Alexander Calder," he says.
The
materials Torrens uses ensure that, like the works of the
masters, these pieces of art will last for generations. His
designs use materials drawn from the earth --- stone, steel,
and other metals --- to create organic forms. The globe stands
accentuate the contemporary side of classic style. "I
not only want these pieces to be durable," Torrens says,
"I want them to endure the test of time as design trends
change. They can be true heirlooms."
Tom
Torrens sculpts in his Washington State studio. His work is
found in many private collections throughout the world ---
in gardens, homes, offices, and commercial structures. He
holds a masters’ degree in fine arts from Washington University
in St. Louis and taught sculpture on the university level
for 15 years.
Torrens says, "The
design elements of my work are reduced to their simplest,
most direct and refined form. Replogle globes’ texture, color,
and craftsmanship are a great complement to my work.
